Players forget the mechanics of a game long before they forget how a character made them feel. That gap — between systems and story — is where a narrative designer lives. We're hiring a Remote Game Narrative Designer to build story arcs, characters, and dialogue that give a game its emotional core. Fully remote, $105,161 a year.
What This Role Covers
You'll be shaping the story a player actually experiences — not just the plot on paper, but how it unfolds through dialogue, choices, and pacing as they play. That means developing characters with real motivation, building world lore that supports the setting, and writing quests and branching storylines that hold together even when a player takes an unexpected path.
None of this happens in isolation. You'll be working closely with developers and artists to ensure narrative elements integrate with gameplay mechanics, rather than sit alongside them as an afterthought.
Core Responsibilities
- Develop story arcs, character backstories, and character motivations that drive the narrative forward.
- Write dialogue that reflects character personality and adapts naturally to player choices.
- Design quests and branching storylines that integrate cleanly with gameplay mechanics.
- Build world lore and environmental storytelling that deepens player immersion.
- Collaborate with developers, artists, and other writers to keep narrative coherent across the entire project.
- Iterate on scripts and dialogue based on playtesting feedback and player response.
- Balance pacing, tension, and emotional beats across a game's full narrative arc.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in creative writing, English, game design, or a related field.
- Experience: A minimum of 3 years of experience in game writing, narrative design, or interactive storytelling.
- A portfolio or writing samples demonstrating character development and dialogue craft.
- Strong understanding of branching narrative structures and how player choice affects story outcomes.
- Comfort collaborating closely with cross-functional development teams.
- Ability to write for a range of tones and genres depending on project needs.
What Strengthens an Application
- Shipped narrative work on a released game, in any genre.
- Experience writing for branching or player-choice-driven story systems.
- Familiarity with narrative design tools or scripting systems used in game engines.
- A track record of iterating on story elements based on playtest feedback.
Compensation and Benefits
This role pays $105,161 annually. Along with that, you'll get:
- Full remote flexibility, with the freedom to structure your work around your creative process.
- Health coverage and paid time off.
- Support for professional development, including writing workshops or industry courses.
- Genuine creative input on projects, not just execution of someone else's outline.
Who Tends to Do Well Here
This role suits someone who can hold both the big picture and the fine detail at once — a full story arc alongside the specific line of dialogue that makes a single scene land. Roles like this occasionally surface on platforms including Naukri Mitra, but what tends to separate strong narrative designers isn't where they found the posting; it's whether they can adapt a story cleanly when gameplay constraints force a change, without losing what made the narrative compelling in the first place.
Comfort with iteration matters too. Scripts get cut, characters get reworked, and pacing shifts once a game is actually playable. Writers who treat that as part of the craft, not a setback, tend to thrive here.
How to Apply
Send your resume along with writing samples or a portfolio demonstrating your range in character work, dialogue, and story structure. A short note on a narrative challenge you've solved in past work helps too. This role is open to remote applicants across a wide range of eligible regions.
