What This Job Actually Involves
You'll be the steady adult in your students' virtual classroom. Planning lessons. Running live sessions. Making sure the quiet kid in the corner box feels just as seen as the one who never stops talking. This is full-time work, built for someone who likes elementary-age kids enough to keep them engaged through a screen — without losing what makes teaching worth doing in the first place.
Your Day-to-Day
- Plan and teach age-appropriate lessons across core subjects, adjusting for different learning styles, including students with IEPs
- Lead live video classes and record them for students learning on their own schedule
- Grade work quickly, with feedback students can actually apply
- Track attendance and progress through your classroom's digital tools
- Send parents regular updates so nobody's surprised at conference time
- Keep the virtual classroom respectful and welcoming, especially for kids who are shy on camera
- Work with other teachers to keep curriculum aligned and share what's working
- Show up for team trainings and planning meetings when they're scheduled
Subjects on Your Plate
Reading and writing — comprehension, storytelling, grammar, vocabulary. Math basics like addition, subtraction, and word problems that actually make sense in context. Social studies covering communities and citizenship. Science is built around observation and simple experiments. Art and music too, so the day isn't all workbooks.
The Parts That Don't Show Up on a Syllabus
Expect role-play, learning games, and read-alouds that turn into real discussions. Some days will include mindfulness breaks or social-emotional check-ins. What You'll Need to Bring
- Education: Bachelor's degree in education, teaching, or a closely related field
- Certification: Valid state teaching license or national certification for elementary education
- Experience: At least 1 year teaching in a classroom or virtual setting
- Comfort with Zoom, Google Classroom, Canvas, or a similar LMS
- The ability to run your own virtual classroom without much hand-holding
- Strong communication skills — with kids, and with the parents behind them
- General ease with educational apps and online assessment tools
Also Nice to Have
- Experience with Seesaw, Nearpod, or ClassDojo
- A background in project-based or inquiry-based teaching
- Some grounding in how elementary-age kids actually think and develop
- Time spent teaching in multicultural or multilingual classrooms
- The patience to troubleshoot a frozen screen mid-lesson without losing the class
