We're hiring a Remote Children's Book Illustrator for picture books, early readers, and a handful of educational titles. Fully remote. Pays $118,500 a year.
What Fills Your Days
- Take manuscript text and turn it into scenes that actually hold a kid's attention — not just a literal illustration of "character stands here"
- Build characters and settings that feel like someone specific lives there, adjusted for whatever age the book's aimed at
- Think about pacing across a spread, since kids are reading pictures at least as much as words
- Take notes from editors and authors and revise — sometimes more than once, sometimes more than twice
- Get final files genuinely print- and web-ready, not just pretty on your own screen
- Catch continuity slips before they ship — hair that changed color between spreads, a background detail that vanished
- Show up for check-ins and say something the moment a piece is falling behind, instead of letting it quietly slide
What You'll Need Coming In
- Minimum education required: High school diploma or equivalent
- 3 years illustrating children's books specifically — freelance counts, in-house counts
- A portfolio that shows you can actually tell a story with images, not just render nice-looking art
- Real self-management, because nobody's watching your calendar for you here

- Actually understanding inclusive representation, past just knowing the phrase
- Having worked with a scattered, remote creative team before

- Clip Studio Paint or Affinity work too, as long as exports stay layered
- InDesign helps, but nobody's ruled out for not knowing it yet
- Slack, Zoom, Trello or Asana, Google Drive or Dropbox — the usual remote-team stack
