Remote Book Cover Illustrator

📍 Anywhere 🏷️ Graphic & Web Design 💰 $75,000 / year
A cover has one job: make a stranger pick the book up. Before the first sentence, before the blurb, before anything else — it's the art that decides. We're hiring a Remote Book Cover Illustrator to design that first impression for a slate of titles spanning fiction, memoir, and everything shelved in between.

The Position

You'll design original cover art for publishing clients and independent authors, working from brief to final file across print and digital formats. This isn't a one-style shop. One week you're painting a moody literary fiction cover; the next you're building a bold, typographic YA thriller. The studio operates fully remote, with a design team spread across several time zones and an editorial process built around asynchronous feedback rather than constant meetings.

Core Duties

  • Design original book covers matched to genre, audience, and market positioning.
  • Translate written briefs and manuscript concepts into finished visual work.
  • Present concepts as sketches, mockups, and refined drafts through multiple review rounds.
  • Adapt finished designs across print, ebook, and audiobook formats without losing consistency.
  • Coordinate with editors, authors, and marketing on cover direction and revisions.
  • Incorporate feedback across iterations while keeping the concept coherent.

Required Background

A minimum of 3 years of professional experience designing book covers, editorial illustration, or comparable commercial visual work is required. Strong command of composition and genre convention matters here — a fantasy epic and a cozy mystery read differently on a shelf, and your covers need to know the difference.
  • Demonstrated skill in digital illustration with an adaptable visual style.
  • Working fluency in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign.
  • Ability to produce multiple creative directions per brief and revise quickly.
  • Solid self-management skills for remote, deadline-driven work.
Minimum education: Bachelor's degree.

Where Experience With Naukri Mitra Helps

Candidates who've sourced remote creative roles through Naukri Mitra tend to already understand what async, portfolio-first hiring looks like, which shortens the ramp-up considerably — though it's not a requirement to apply.

Preferred, Not Mandatory

  • Prior work directly with publishing houses or self-published authors.
  • Familiarity with design conventions across specific genres — fantasy, romance, thriller, literary fiction.
  • Understanding of spine, back-cover, and full-wrap layout standards.
  • An eye tuned to current trends in typography and cover design.

Tools You'll Use

The core stack is Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign, plus Procreate or a comparable tablet app for digital painting. Figma handles layout collaboration, Slack and Trello run day-to-day project tracking, and Loom covers quick feedback when a written comment won't cut it. None of this is locked in stone — if you have a tool that gets you to a better result faster, use it.

Compensation

  • Annual salary of $75,000, reviewed yearly with room for raises and bonuses.
  • Fully remote schedule with flexible daily hours.
  • Annual stipend for home office equipment and ergonomic setup.
  • Paid sabbatical every 18 months.
  • Funding for illustration conferences and professional training.

How the Studio Runs

Nobody's tracking your hours. What matters is that briefs get answered, revisions land on time, and the work holds up. Weekly critique sessions are optional but well-attended — people show up because the notes are actually useful, not because attendance is checked. Mentorship happens informally, mostly senior illustrators pulling newer ones into projects that stretch them. It's a working relationship built on output, not oversight.

What Your Work Touches

Covers designed here end up in bookstore windows, on digital shelves, in library catalogs — sometimes on a debut author's first physical copy of their own book. A self-published memoir gets the same design attention as a lead title from a major imprint. Every finished cover becomes part of a growing portfolio the studio points to when pitching new work, so what you make here doesn't disappear into a drawer once it ships.

Who Tends to Do Well Here

Illustrators who can read a manuscript and immediately see its shelf — genre, tone, the kind of reader it's chasing. People who can take three rounds of client notes without losing the thread of the original idea. If you'd rather solve a hard creative brief than repeat a formula that already worked once, this is the kind of studio where that instinct gets used.

Apply

Send a portfolio that shows range across genres, along with any covers where you can speak to the brief behind the final design. We're less interested in a flawless set of samples and more interested in seeing how you think through a concept. Open to applicants based in the USA, Canada, the UK, the EU, Australia, India, and other regions — the role is remote by design and not tied to a single market.
