What You'd Actually Do
Build courses. Sometimes from a blank page, sometimes fixing ones that already exist but aren't working — low completion rates, outdated content, whatever the problem is. You'll write, structure lessons, and decide where video or graphics actually earn a spot versus where they're just filler. Subject matter varies a lot. A technical course and a soft-skills course don't get built the same way, and figuring out that difference is part of the job.
Responsibilities
- Build full online courses from scratch, start to finish
- Pull in video, graphics, or interactive pieces only where they help the lesson land
- Fix courses that aren't performing — low completions, dated material, clunky navigation
- Build quizzes and activities that actually check whether someone learned the thing
- Check courses on phones and tablets, not just a laptop screen, before anything goes live
- Talk to instructors and subject experts regularly so the content stays accurate
What Gets You Hired
Some background in instructional design or educational technology helps, but honestly, a portfolio matters more than a degree title. If you've built courses before and they worked, show us. You'll need to know your way around authoring software, plus basic video editing and layout work — the stuff that actually goes into building a modern online course.
Details matter more here than people expect going in. A course can look great on a laptop and still fall apart on mobile, or lose someone halfway through because the navigation's confusing. That's not a finished course, even if the content itself is solid.
