Remote Mortgage Underwriting Team Lead, you're running a team of underwriters and signing off on the files that need a real decision, not just a rubber stamp — all without an office in sight.
The Position, Straight Up
Your team works FHA, VA, USDA, Jumbo, and Conventional files. When something gets escalated — an overlay conflict, a judgment call, a file that breaks the pattern — it lands with you. You're the last check before a loan moves forward.
There's also the people side. Workload, coaching, keeping accuracy up when deadlines are tight. Underwriters need to trust your calls, and compliance needs your standards to hold up when someone actually audits the file.
What You'll Be Responsible For
- Supervising a team of remote underwriters, including workload distribution and SLA management
- Making final decisions on escalated or judgment-based loan files
- Reviewing complex files across FHA, VA, USDA, Jumbo, and Conventional loan types
- Enforcing consistent application of underwriting guidelines and investor overlays
- Maintaining compliance with federal, state, and investor regulations, including CFPB, RESPA, and TILA
- Running onboarding, training, and coaching for underwriters at different experience levels
- Partnering with operations leadership to reduce turn times without sacrificing accuracy
- Identifying where automation or workflow changes can cut down manual review time
Qualifications We're Looking For
- Education: Bachelor's degree required
- Experience: Minimum 5 years underwriting residential mortgage loans, including at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory capacity managing underwriters
- Strong working knowledge of FHA, VA, USDA, and Conventional loan structures
- Proven track record managing remote teams against strict SLA timelines
- Sound judgment on loan files that don't fit standard guidelines
- Clear, direct communication skills suited to a remote leadership role
Nice to Have
- DE (Direct Endorsement) certification, or LAPP/SAR designation
- Experience with Encompass, Blend, or ICE Mortgage Technology platforms
- Familiarity with automated underwriting systems such as DU, LP, or GUS
- Prior involvement in audit response or regulatory review processes
