Remote Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Specialist
Every FOIA request comes down to one judgment call, really: what does the public have a right to see, and what genuinely needs to stay protected? Get it wrong one way, and someone accuses you of hiding something. Get it wrong the other way, and you've released information that shouldn't have gone out. We're hiring a Remote FOIA Specialist to sit in that gap and get the call right, request after request.
$77,974 a year. Fully remote.
What You'd Actually Be Doing
Requests come in, and you process them from start to finish — reviewing materials to determine what falls under an exemption, what needs redaction, and what can go out as-is. This isn't skimming work. A document can look completely routine and still be hiding something that shouldn't be released without a second look.
Once you've worked through the material, you write the response letter, and it must explain your reasoning clearly enough that someone without a law degree can follow it. Legal and compliance teams help pull documents together, deadlines get tracked so nothing slips past its statutory window, and the genuinely thorny cases go up to senior legal advisors instead of getting guessed at.
- Evaluate and respond to incoming FOIA requests within required timelines
- Determine exemptions and apply redactions where the law requires it
- Draft response letters that lay out findings and legal reasoning clearly
FOIA law shifts more than people expect, and yesterday's precedent doesn't always hold. Part of the job is staying current on that, and flagging it when a process is slowing things down without actually protecting anything.
Systems You'll Be In
Case tracking runs through secure content management systems, along with FOIA-specific request software and redaction tools designed to handle sensitive material carefully. Legal research databases help with case reference. Most team collaboration happens over cloud-based platforms.
What Gets You Hired
A bachelor's degree in Law, Political Science, Public Administration, or a related field is the baseline. What matters more is at least 2 years actually handling FOIA requests or comparable regulatory work — this isn't a role to learn from scratch. You'll need to understand FOIA exemptions and federal information policy well enough to apply judgment, not just cite the statute, and be comfortable working through large volumes of documentation without losing accuracy.
- Bachelor's degree, minimum, in Law, Political Science, Public Administration, or a related field
- At least 2 years handling FOIA requests or similar regulatory work
- Comfortable with legal language and formal documentation standards
- Able to manage time-sensitive deadlines independently
None of these are strictly required, but they help: prior government or compliance work, familiarity with record retention laws beyond FOIA itself, experience training others on documentation standards, or a background handling sensitive material.
A lot of government-adjacent postings on Naukri Mitra read more like policy essays than actual job descriptions. This one's meant to stay plain about the work — review requests, apply judgment, write responses that hold up if questioned later.
Pay and What's Included
- $77,974 USD annual salary
- 100% remote setup
- Paid time off and federal holidays
- Ongoing legal training and certification support
How the Work Actually Runs
You largely control your own schedule, without a calendar packed with meetings that don't need to happen. Regular check-ins keep the team connected, and documentation, systems, and onboarding resources all live on secure, cloud-based platforms you can reach from wherever you're working. The independence is real. So is the support if something unfamiliar comes up early on.
Where This Can Go
People in this role tend to move toward Senior FOIA Analyst positions overseeing multiple case streams, into legal operations work supporting cross-functional requests, or eventually into a compliance lead role. Each step builds pretty directly on the judgment this job already requires.
Applying
Send your resume along with a short note on your FOIA or regulatory request experience — a particularly complex case you've handled tells us more than a general summary would. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and we prioritize candidates who show real legal judgment over just familiarity with the statute. Open to applicants from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Australia, India, and other eligible regions.
