The short version
You'll own our cloud security posture. Not "assist with" it, not "support" it — own it. That means watching for anomalies, running audits, closing gaps, and making the calls that keep our systems defensible. Part-time hours don't shrink the responsibility; they just compress it.
What you're actually doing
Some weeks this is quiet — reviewing logs, tightening a policy, nothing dramatic. Other weeks something breaks, and you're the person who has to figure out what happened and fix it fast. Both are part of the job.
- Monitoring for suspicious activity and responding when something's actually wrong
- Running audits on a regular cadence, not just when someone asks
- Recommending controls that reduce risk without making everyone else's job harder
- Talking to IT regularly so policy reflects reality, not a document from last year
- Keeping us compliant with whatever standards apply to us
- Writing things down clearly — incidents, fixes, reasoning — so someone else could pick up where you left off
Cloud security manager jobs that are actually remote (not "remote, but you'll need to be in the Bay Area for meetings") are harder to find than they should be. This one's the real thing.
What you need to bring
Hands-on experience with at least one major cloud platform — AWS, Azure, GCP. More than one is better. You should be able to read a security log without squinting, and explain what it means to someone who's never opened one.
Beyond that: risk assessment work, incident response, some grasp of compliance frameworks. Communication skills that hold up when you're the only security person in a room full of non-technical people.
Part-time doesn't mean loosely supervised. We're trusting you to notice things early and prioritize without someone checking in every hour. That's the tradeoff for the flexibility. Bonus points for
CISSP or CCSP. Experience with automated security scanning or infrastructure-as-code checks. Any time spent mentoring someone junior. A background touching data privacy regulation. None of these are required — they just help.

Because the pay doesn't feel like part-time pay, and neither does the responsibility. You get real authority here, not a watered-down version of the job. The scope grows too — as our cloud footprint expands, so does what's on your plate. This isn't a role that stays static.
How it actually runs
Nobody's tracking your login times. You coordinate with IT and other teams when required, and otherwise manage your own hours. Deliver the work, and how you get there is mostly up to you.
