Remote Front-End Accessibility Engineer
Description
Remote Front-End Accessibility Engineer
Join Us in Building a Web That Works for Everyone
Are you a developer who believes that technology should be inclusive for all? Do you have a passion for building accessible digital experiences that empower users with diverse abilities? We are seeking a Remote Front-End Accessibility Engineer who shares our vision of creating universally usable interfaces. This is your chance to influence meaningful change by ensuring the digital world is built with accessibility as a standard, not an afterthought.
This opportunity offers a fully remote schedule and a competitive annual salary of $160,000. If you thrive on bringing empathy to engineering, solving nuanced interface challenges, and collaborating across design and product teams, this role is made for you.
What You’ll Be Doing
Ensuring Inclusive User Experiences
You will be at the forefront of embedding accessibility into all stages of the front-end development lifecycle. From the wireframe phase to launch, your input will help ensure that digital platforms are intuitive and usable for individuals with vision, hearing, cognitive, or mobility impairments.
Collaborating Across Teams
You’ll work closely with UX researchers, designers, and fellow engineers to advocate for accessible solutions. You’ll serve as a subject matter expert on inclusive design, offering thoughtful suggestions and building a culture that values accessibility-first thinking.
Building and Reviewing Code for Compliance
From semantic HTML to ARIA roles and keyboard navigation, you’ll write clean, scalable code that aligns with WCAG 2.2 AA standards and legal accessibility requirements. You’ll also lead code reviews to ensure ongoing adherence to accessibility best practices.
Empowering Through Education
Part of your role will involve upskilling others. You’ll conduct knowledge-sharing sessions, build documentation, and support developers in troubleshooting accessibility issues with screen readers or alternative input methods.
Responsibilities
- Architect and implement accessible front-end components using modern frameworks like React or Vue
- Collaborate with design teams to validate that UI/UX elements follow accessibility principles.
- Conduct accessibility audits using tools such as Axe, Lighthouse, or WAVE, and remediate any identified findings.
- Implement robust keyboard navigation and test with screen readers (e.g., NVDA, VoiceOver)
- Advocate for inclusive design principles across engineering and product discussions.
- Stay updated on evolving accessibility standards and legal frameworks (e.g., ADA, Section 508)
- Participate in usability testing with users who rely on assistive technologies.
The Environment You’ll Thrive In
A Remote-First Culture of Respect
We offer a work-from-anywhere setup that supports autonomy, trust, and balance. Our team prioritizes purpose over presence and believes in asynchronous collaboration, enabling deep work.
People-First Values
We welcome developers from all walks of life. Whether you're an accessibility advocate who taught yourself to code or a senior engineer with a formal background, we care about your impact, not your origin.
Empathy-Driven Teamwork
You'll join a team that values thoughtful communication and mutual support. We believe accessibility is not one person's job—it's everyone's responsibility. Our engineers don't just build interfaces; they build understanding.
Tools and Technologies You’ll Use
- JavaScript, TypeScript, and modern frameworks like React, Vue, or Svelte
- Accessibility testing tools: Axe DevTools, Lighthouse, WAVE, NVDA, VoiceOver
- Version control: Git and GitHub
- CI/CD platforms to ensure continuous quality
- Figma or Sketch with accessibility annotations
What We’re Looking For
Core Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of front-end development experience with a focus on accessibility
- Deep understanding of HTML semantics, ARIA standards, and keyboard navigation techniques
- Familiarity with WCAG 2.1/2.2 guidelines and how to apply them in practical coding scenarios
- Hands-on experience auditing and remediating accessibility issues
- Comfort working in agile, collaborative, and remote-first environments
Bonus Skills
- Experience with mobile accessibility and native platforms (iOS/Android)
- Contributions to accessibility-focused open-source projects
- Familiarity with assistive technology user flows and personas
- Strong communication skills, particularly when explaining technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders
