Remote Database Reliability Engineer

Description

Remote Database Reliability Engineer

Pioneering Data Reliabilityโ€”From Anywhere

How do you design data systems that donโ€™t break, even when everything else does? If you believe reliability is an art formโ€”one that blends automation, foresight, and relentless curiosityโ€”youโ€™ll feel right at home here. As a Remote Database Reliability Engineer, youโ€™ll move beyond reacting to incidents; youโ€™ll architect proactive solutions that empower global teams and fuel customer trust. Your work wonโ€™t just protect business continuityโ€”itโ€™ll define it. If youโ€™re ready to turn high-stakes challenges into peace of mind for thousands of users, this could be your next adventure.

Shaping Outcomes That Matter

Picture this: Your finely tuned monitoring catches an issue before users ever notice. Automated recovery scripts enable a cluster to be brought back online in seconds. You celebrate the week not because nothing went wrong but because your prep made it feel effortless. Thatโ€™s your north starโ€”transforming potential headaches into stories of resilience. Every dashboard you build and every alert you tune keeps critical data flowing and businesses thriving, all while you enjoy the flexibility of remote-first work.

Key Contributions and Impact

Crafting Proactive Defenses

  • Design, implement, and continuously evolve automated failover, backup, and recovery strategiesโ€”so every byte is safe, always.
  • Build robust database observability with Grafana, Prometheus, or similar tools, letting teams act before a blip becomes a crisis.
  • Translate on-call incidents into actionable improvements that minimize downtime and make it a rare occurrence.

Collaborating for Uptime Excellence

  • Partner with platform engineers, SREs, and application leads to identify areas for improvement and drive system-wide reliability.
  • Mentor developers on resilient coding and database best practicesโ€”your coaching multiplies impact across the company.
  • Guide architecture reviews, influencing data models and scaling strategies from the start.

Automation and Continuous Improvement

  • Craft scripts and pipelines that eliminate repetitive manual toil, freeing yourself and your teammates to focus on innovation.
  • Spearheaded chaos engineering initiatives, turning controlled chaos into lessons that harden our infrastructure.
  • Simplify complex operational conceptsโ€”whether itโ€™s a late-night Slack conversation or a technical write-upโ€”so everyone is empowered to contribute.

Driving Security and Compliance

  • Collaborate with InfoSec teams to embed encryption, role-based access, and compliance controls right into our data flows.
  • Respond swiftly to emerging threats, always prioritizing the protection of user data.

Tools and Tech Environment

Youโ€™ll navigate a landscape of PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, and cloud-native database platformsโ€”plus automation tools like Terraform and Ansible and CI/CD with Jenkins or GitHub Actions. Our remote collaboration suite includes Notion, Slack, and Zoom, ensuring seamless alignment regardless of your location. Youโ€™ll shape reliability reviews, incident retrospectives, and future-proofing sessions, ensuring every lesson translates into lasting progress.

Who Thrives Here

You turn monitoring dashboards into actionable narrativesโ€”spotting signals and trends others miss. When an alert goes off at 2 a.m., your response is steady and decisive, but youโ€™re equally motivated to prevent that alert from ever recurring. Your background likely includes hands-on database administration, troubleshooting distributed systems, and a passion for performance tuning. Maybe youโ€™ve automated yourself out of a former job or led a war room during a high-stakes incident. Most importantly, youโ€™re energized by making complexity invisible to everyone else.

You simplify complex ideasโ€”whether itโ€™s over Zoom or Slack. Your communication builds confidence, not confusion. Youโ€™re at your best when collaborating across time zones, blending engineering rigor with a sense of camaraderie that makes remote work truly work. And you move quickly, but youโ€™ll always have space to focus intensely on what matters most.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Significant experience in database reliability, administration, or DevOps engineering (with hands-on time in cloud or distributed environments).
  • Expertise in at least one major database technology (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, or cloud-managed equivalents).
  • Proven success in implementing monitoring, alerting, and automated remediation for database systems at scale.
  • Proficiency with infrastructure-as-code and scripting for automation (Bash, Python, or equivalent).
  • Experience guiding or participating in incident response and post-mortem analysisโ€”turning setbacks into improvements.
  • Familiarity with security practices and compliance in modern database environments.
  • Genuine curiosity and a relentless drive for learning; youโ€™re always searching for a better way.
